A future for hemp? From alimentation to industry, a neglected potential of an extraordinary plant, by Enrico Cevolani

Cannabis sativa is a plant probably coming from Asia in ancient times, which is now spread all over the world. Its medical characteristics were already known in China, India and also in Persia, Greece and in the Roman Empire. During the Middle Age it was an important plant especially for those Nations which based their power on the sea domination. For this reason hemp was so important, for example, in the venetian republic, because Cannabis was used to produce ropes and sails for the Republic ships. Only after the Napoleonic Campaign in Egypt the medical potential of Cannabis sativa is discovered again. In Italy Carlo Erba was the first pharmacist who produced a medicine with hemp.
Now Cannabis has a great potential in different sectors. In food industry its oil and seeds can be used for their interesting properties. In cosmetics hemp oil can be used to moisturize the skin or to revitalize hair. Cannabis can be also used to produce ropes, sails, clothes, paper and also cars in motor industry. Henry Ford projected a car by using mostly plant fibres like Cannabis fibre and the result was the first car “grown from the soil” as Ford said. In 2008 Lotus presented a new car constructed by using mostly hemp fibre: Lotus Eco Elise.
