Il monaco francescano Francesco Sirena pubblicò a Pavia nel 1679 un'opera intitolata "L'arte dello Speziale", un lungo lavoro dedicato a sottolineare l'importanza di un’adeguata formazione culturale per l'esercizio dell’arte farmaceutica. Il risultato è stato che questo studio, come molti altri del genere apparsi in quel periodo e ripetutamente citati dal nostro autore in tutta la sua lunga esposizione, risulta essere un monumentale libro di ricette.
L’opera è data da oltre un migliaio di pagine contenenti più di 1.200 ricette dove l’eredità degli antichi autori è rispettata e riproposta accanto alle nuove pratiche e alle nuove dottrine del diciassettesimo secolo.

The Franciscan monk Francesco Sirena published in Pavia in 1679 a work entitled “L’arte dello Speziale”, a long work dedicated point to point to the importance of adequate cultural training for the pharmaceutical art exercise. The result was that this work, like many other of the genre appeared in that period and repeatedly cited by our author in all its long exposure route, turns out to be a monumental book of recipies.
The work consists of over a thousand pages containing more than 1,200 recipes where it is respected the tradition of ancient authors and compared with the new practices and new doctrines of the seventeenth century.
