Sebastiano Venzo, a XIX century chemist and amateur botanist of the Dolomites, catalogued in the Florence main herbarium, by Ernesto Riva

During the second half of the XIX century, Sebastiano Venzo devoted himself to drawing up a huge herbarium containing more than a thousand species classified according to the Linnaean system.
The herbarium was called “Flora Cadorina” and represented an useful instrument to know the places where the plants grow and their therapeutic utilization.
However, Venzo regarded himself as a “simple herbalist” and nothing more, but about 50 years later Renato Pampanini, a famous botanist, published for the Reale Istituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti a weighty essay titled “Sebastiano Venzo and his herbarium”. It was a scientific exhaustive and critical examination of all Venzo’s exicata species catalogued in the Florence Main Herbarium.
In his will Sebastiano Venzo left his herbarium to Filippo Parlatore, the well-known compiler of the Florence Main Herbarium.
